Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
